About
CAPs is a community behavioral health center serving primarily the Orthodox Jewish community within Rockland County, NY and its surround. The clinic provides a wide range of services and programs including individual, family, and group therapy, as well as school-based counseling services and community education.
Who We Are
Highly regarded in the mental health field and renowned internationally, CAPs has witnessed rapid growth in recent years, progressing from 3,326 annual clinic visits in 2000 to over 15,700 visits in 2011. CAPs is proud of its continuous growth and success, an achievement directly attributable to the high-level professionalism, caring of its staff, its religiously- and culturally- informed service delivery, and its long-standing and close relationships with community leaders, agencies, schools, institutions, and other health providers. The Rockland community and beyond knows it can reliably turn to the Center for Applied Psychology (CAPs), assured that they will receive “private practice” care in a clinic setting.
Our Mission
The mission of the Center for Applied Psychology (CAPs) at Bikur Cholim – Partners in Health is to provide the highest level of clinical behavioral and emotional health care, education and outreach to the community.
Clinical Director
The Director of CAPs, Dr. Yitzchak (Isaac) Schechter, PsyD, is a clinical psychologist and a recognized leader in emotional and behavioral health care in the Jewish community and beyond. In addition to supervising, Dr. Schechter regularly provides training to rabbonim and community leaders, schooling them in how to identify mental health issues and partner with professionals to help the community. Dr. Schechter lectures internationally and has published widely on topics of psychology, religion, and the religious community. His research findings on mental health and the Orthodox Jewish community have been a catalyst for positive change in the attitudes and service utilization in the Jewish community. In addition to his work at CAPs, Dr. Schechter also maintains a private practice in Wesley Hills working with adolescents and adults.
